Racing Rules

These rules are listed here as a courtesy to get most people up to speed. Most importantly though, these are tentative rules and are subject to change at the race site. So no whining, sniveling, or complaining!

NW SCALE HYDROPLANE CHAMPIONSHIP RULES

Starting the Race:

1.) Contestants can start their engines when the PA system announces that they are "on the clock"

2.) Boats shall be launched parallel to the shoreline and must proceed around the left turn. Boats cutting straight across the course will be penalized one lap.

3.) Boats may only cut the race course from the front straightaway to the rear straightaway. Boats that are proceeding up the back straightaway shall have the right-of-way. If a boat cutting the course forces a boat proceeding up the back straightaway to take any defensive action to avoid the boat that is cutting the race course, the boat cutting the course shall be assessed a one lap penalty.

4.) During the mill any boat cutting the race course after the 5 second mark will be assessed a one-lap penalty. The boat must have at a minimum crossed into the infield prior to the 5 second mark.

5.) All boats must be on the racecourse and on plane 30 seconds prior to the start, no boat launched from the 30 second to the zero mark will be scored. Boats that have fallen off plane are subject to a one-lap penalty. This is a judgment call by the Contest Director/Referee.

6.) Any boat striking a buoy during the mill or the race shall be assessed a one lap penalty for each infraction.

7.) If in the judgment of the Contest Director/Referee, a boat is not holding it's lane of travel, a one lap penalty may be assessed, particularly if an offending boat causes the non-offending boat out of it's lane to avoid either a collision or is washed down with the offending boats rooster tail. During the run to the start all boats must hold their lanes from the exit pin of the right turn to the starting buoy.

8.) The boat designated as the "trailer" or 7th boat in the final heat, shall not have proceeded past the exit buoy of the right turn at the zero second "start" of the final heat. The trailer boat will be assessed a one lap penalty if it has proceeded past the exit buoy at the zero second mark or "start" .

9.) If any part of a boat has crossed the start /finish line prior to the starting horn than that boat has not made a legal start and will just be considered late for the start.

The Race:

1.) Any boat striking a buoy or cutting inside a buoy shall be assessed a one- lap penalty. The only exceptions are if a non-offending boat is forced out of it's lane by an offending boat and the offending boat is penalized for a lane infraction. If a boat cuts a buoy to avoid an immanent collision with another boat (or debris) that has just overturned, spun out, ect., The Contest/ Director/Referee may not assess a penalty if in their judgment, that cutting the buoy was the proper course of action to avoid property damage or compromising safety.

2.) Lane changes/Right-of-way. A boat must have a rooster tails lead over another boat before it can move into another boats lane of travel. This applies at all times. It shall be deemed a lane violation if a boat on the inside of another boat in a turn does not maintain the lane of travel it possessed when it entered the turn, (the start of the turn being determined by the entrance buoy). Boats transitioning from the straightaway to a turn must hold their lane, unless they have a rooster tail's lead.

3.) Cutting the course at the end of a heat will not be permitted without the permission of the Contest Director (any points earned in that heat will be forfeited) Boats must be brought to the shore parallel to the beach.

Change of Drivers:

Any driver change must be done prior to the start of racing; no further driver changes are allowed.

Protests and Appeals:

The Contest Director/Referee shall have the sole responsibility for the conduct of the regatta. All judgment calls by the Contest Director/Referee are final and may not be appealed. There will be a driver Rep announced at the drivers meeting that will manage all procedural disputes.

Unsportsman-like Conduct:

1.) Every boat owner, driver and crew member shall be subject to disciplinary action for unsportsmanlike conduct. Unsportsmanlike conduct shall be defined as any act that: a. Brings racing into disrepute. b. Endangers persons or property by not following event safety rules. c. Constitutes dangerous, careless or reckless operation of boats or other equipment.

The Contest Director/Referee shall have the sole power to impose any penalty that he deems appropriate for unsportsmanlike conduct. If the Contest Director/Referee imposes a penalty, he shall notify the offending party of their penalty as soon as possible.

Hitting Dead Boats:

Hitting a declared dead boat in either practice or in the race can result in immediate disqualification from the event. Depending on the damage that was inflicted to the dead boat the Contest Director may also levy a monetary penalty to the offending driver. The dollar amount can range from $25 for minor damage to $100.00 for major damage. It will be the responsibility of the drivers involved to work out the payment terms. As always the CD will have final say in the penalty...

Inspections:

When a boat has gone out of control for any reason, or has been beached said boat must be inspected by the Contest Director or his designate before returning to the race course. The inspection shall include a radio range check. Boats that return to the race course without said inspection are subject to disqualification. It shall be incumbent upon the boat owner to seek out the Contest Director or his designate for said inspection. It shall be the responsibility of the inspector to notify the Contest Director of said boats status to continue or discontinue in the regatta. The inspector shall make safety the paramount issue on whether allowing a boat to continue.

Race Stoppages:

Any heat may be stopped if in the Contest Directors judgment, an unsafe condition prevails on the race course or along the shoreline. Any boat that has gone dead after the heat was stopped will be eligible to restart the heat, as long as the said boat was not the source of the race stoppage.

Coaching:

First year drivers may not coach other first year driver's.

Points:

A point system as follows will determine placement in heats, consolation races and the final heat.

1st = 400 & 2nd = 300& 3rd = 225 & 4th = 169 & 5th = 127& 6th = 95

*** A boat that loses cowlings, wings, fake engines or leaves debris upon the race course shall be awarded 6th place points, no matter their order of placement. The exception would be if said boat was involved in a collision that was not the fault of said boat and the offending boat in the collision has been assessed a penalty.

***If an offending boat causes another boat to go dead on the race course, the offending boat shall be disqualified from that particular heat, and the non-offending boat shall be awarded fourth place points.

The Pits:

1.) The pits shall be set up in accordance with the insurance requirements for that particular insurance carrier.

2.) There shall be no open flames or smoking in the pit area.

3.) Alcoholic beverages are expressly forbidden

4.) The pit area will be cordoned off to discourage unauthorized persons from entering the pit area.

5.) There shall be no open toed shoes allowed in the pit area by drivers, owners or launching assistants.

Definition of Terms:

1.) Holding a lane=running a boat parallel to the buoy line.

2.) Penalty. A penalty may be a one lap penalty or disqualification. Any boat receiving more than two penalties during a heat shall be disqualified for that said heat.
